Start with the work they have shipped.
A good virtual reality company can show you projects that run on real headsets, not just concept videos. Open their project pages and check the devices, the interaction and what each project did not do. Our own pages state limits too. The page for our forklift simulator (Spanish only) says it offers no automatic certification. Ask each company how they would measure whether your project worked.
Seven questions to ask any VR studio.
Which headsets have you shipped on?
Ask for the exact devices, such as Meta Quest or PC VR.
How do you test without taking up my team's time?
Simulators and short headset sessions save everyone time.
Which standards do you use?
OpenXR makes it easier to reach other headsets later.
Who owns the code?
It should be clear before any work starts.
How is the work priced?
A fixed quote per phase avoids open-ended bills.
How will you publish it?
Store review takes time and needs a plan.
What will the project not do?
Honest limits are a good sign.
What separates a careful VR company.
Most offers look alike on paper. The differences appear in how a studio tests, how it prices and what it promises. Use this table to put the answers you receive side by side.

| Criterion | Weak answer | Strong answer |
|---|---|---|
| Proof | Concept videos | Published projects you can open |
| Testing | Only at the end | On your headsets in every phase |
| Standards | One device only | OpenXR, so other headsets stay possible |
| Price | A single total upfront | A fixed quote for each phase |
| Results | Guaranteed outcomes | Clear limits and a way to measure |

What the evidence on VR training says.
If you are buying VR for training, ask the company how it reads the research. A 2024 systematic review in Safety Science found VR safety training outperforms traditional training in knowledge acquisition and retention. The same review notes that only 36% of the studies it covered measured long-term retention. A careful partner will plan a way to check results in your own team. Plan the store release early too, since Meta advises submitting an app at least two weeks before launch.
